Freewill, Casting, and Sustaining

Posted on: September 7th, 2010 by Susan No Comments

As I read psalms 54 and 55 this morning, three words struck me:  freewill, cast, and sustain.

Psalm 54 says, “I will sacrifice a freewill offering to you; I will praise your name, O LORD,  for it is good.”

The psalmist sacrifices an offering of his own freewill–not because he has to, but because he wants to do so.   His response to God is one of complete praise.

Psalm 55:22 says, “Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall.”

Here, the psalmist affirms another action to take in response to God’s goodness:  casting our cares upon the Lord.  The result?  I will be sustained by God–not by any sacrifice I make, but by God himself.  The sacrifice is about expressing my love for God.  His sustaining me comes directly from His desire to care for His people.

The next few weeks of my life look a bit daunting as I prepare to move, work on a couple of major projects, keep up with work commitments, etc.  I will do well to remind myself of the value of a freewill sacrifice coupled with casting my cares upon God.
